NYCN Casts Doubt on Obi's Single-Term Promise

By Sani Idris Abdulrahman

The National President of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Isah Abubakar, has expressed skepticism over Peter Obi's pledge to serve only one term as president, calling it a political tactic to win Northern votes.

In a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday in Kaduna, Abubakar cited former President Muhammadu Buhari's broken pledge as a precedent, questioning Obi's ability to keep his word.

Abubakar believed that Obi's promise is designed to deceive Northern voters.

"A new Southern candidate would face significant resistance from the North in 2027, given President Bola Tinubu's nearing end of his first term".

Abubakar suggests the North to back Tinubu for a second term.

He proposed Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as a potential candidate, allowing the South to complete its eight-year presidential tenure without exceeding it.

He noted that Jonathan would be eligible for only one four-year term.

Abubakar asserts that while Obi may be trustworthy, political power brokers would ultimately control the decision to run for a second term, making it unlikely for him to uphold his promise.
