Rivers: State of emergency opportunity for political actors to resolve differences – CSO

 By Perpetua Onuegbu

A civil society organisation (CSO), Peering Advocacy and Advancement Center in Africa (PAACA), has described the declaration of state of emergency in Rivers as an opportunity for political actors in the state to resolve their differences.

The Executive Director of PAACA, Mr Ezenwa Nwagwu, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Nwagwu said that the development would help in restoring calm to the state after all the crises it had witnessed in recent times.

“My point is that all the political actors are the losers. They can seize the window provided by the state of emergency and lock themselves in a room and try to resolve their differences.

“The declaration of state of emergency by the president and for this purpose, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, is a huge opportunity for reconciliation by the political actors in Rivers.

“The consequences of the impeachment road they were treading can only be best imagined.

“I know there are arguments about the constitutionality of the president’s action; all that pales into insignificance when placed side-by-side the news of the pipelines already being blown up and its implication for the country’s revenue,” he said.

Nwagwu said that the declaration was necessary for all those in disagreement to come to the table, trash out their differences and come to agree in order to move the state forward.

According to him, for pipelines to be targetted and blown off is not helping the finances of the country, even as the harsh economic realities are affecting everything, including governance.

Nwagwu, therefore, appealed to the combatants, stakeholders and political actors in the state to come together and have a dialogue, for the greater good of the state and its people. (NAN)
