NYCN condemns removal of Rivers state governor, says it's unlawful

By Sani Idris-Abdulrahman

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has strongly condemned the recent removal of the elected Governor of Rivers State, Siminalaye Fubara, saying that it is against the law.

This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen on Thursday in Kaduna by
Isah Abubakar, the
National President of the NYCN.

Abubakar, lamented that Fubara's removal, as orchestrated by the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, was a brazen act that undermined the democratic principles which Nigeria cherishes.

He added that the act, jeopardised the rule of law, stating that the NYCN viewed the action as a direct assault on the will of the people, as expressed through their votes.

"Such actions threaten the very foundation of our democratic system and raise concerns about the integrity of governance in Nigeria"he said.

The national president, therefore, called on all stakeholders including the judiciary and civil society to uphold the tenets of democracy and ensure that the voice of the electorate is respected.

He also urged president Tinubu to prioritise national unity and stability over partisan interests and to foster an environment where governance is guided by law, respect, and accountability.

Abubakar emphasised that democracy the council fought for must not be betrayed by political manoeuvring that disregard the constitution and the will of the people, while reaffirming the NYCN's commitment to safeguarding democracy and promoting good governance across Nigeria.

"We stand with the people of Rivers State and call for the immediate restoration of their elected leadership", he said.
