Family Support Initiative Advocates Gender Equality In Govt., Women Empowerment

By Stella Kabruk

The Self Discovery Empowerment Foundation International, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has made an appeal for greater gender equality within the government sector.

The call was made by Kate Isah, the Founder of the organisation, at a gathering in Kaduna on Saturday to celebrate the International Women’s Day.

Isah emphasised the importance of empowering women with education, tools and confidence to take control of their own lives.

“By providing women with the necessary resources, we can collectively accelerate action for gender equality,” she said.

Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” Isah underscored the urgency of taking decisive steps towards gender equality.

“It’s vital to recognise that both genders play essential roles in sustaining society.

“Women must not face discrimination, and they should be given equal access to education, healthcare, employment, leadership positions, and economic opportunities,” she explained.

Isah also stressed that International Women’s Day was an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of women worldwide, acknowledge the progress made, and recommit to the ongoing work of empowering women and girls.

“As an organisation, we aim to amplify the voices of women and girls and support their participation in leadership and decision-making processes,” she stated.

While acknowledging the progress made, Isah pointed out the continued challenges women and girls face, including discrimination, violence, and limited access to essential resources like education and healthcare.

“Women, as homebuilders, hold the power to shape society. No effort to educate or empower women ever goes to waste,” she said.

Isah further noted that there was immense potential when women are involved in governance.

“We believe that women’s involvement can lead to significant opportunities and growth,” she added.

In line with the 2025 theme, Isah called on the government to renew its commitment to providing greater opportunities for women and girls.

“We must work together to dismantle the systemic barriers that prevent women from reaching their full potential and create a more equitable and just society for everyone,” she said.

The event, held at Badiko community, also encouraged women to take on leadership roles in driving behavioural change and development within their communities.

The women in attendance expressed their gratitude to the organisation for the recognition and pledged their commitment to addressing Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), a key focus of the organisation’s efforts.
