Tinubu ignoring our request to appoint Tejuosho because we are disabled - PLWDs

By Sani Idris

The Coalition of Professional Persons Living With Disabilities  (PLWDs) in Nigeria, representing over 13 million people, has expressed deep worries and concerns following the delayed appointment of Halimat Tejuosho as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

In a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday by Bar. Imsail Dabai, convener of the

coalition, he said that in spite their unwavering support for the incumbent administration, they cannot help but feel marginalized and overlooked as their request continues to be ignored, while those of other groups are being granted.

"Tinubu is ignoring our request to appoint Tejuosho because we are disabled.

"We are left to wonder if our disability status is the reason for the President's continued overlook of our requests. It is disheartening to note that despite our contributions to the country, our requests are constantly delayed or ignored, while those of non-disabled individuals are prioritized,"he lamented.

According to Dabai, remarkably, Tejuosho's appointment would be a well-deserved recognition of her tireless efforts in serving the disabled community, providing humanitarian aid, and stabilizing the government during times of crisis.

He added that her selflessness and leadership have earned her the respect and admiration of the coalition and the wider PLWD community.

He noted that Halimat Tejuosho risked her life traveling to Jos, Abuja, and other parts of the country, meeting with Civil Societies to shield their sword before and during the #EndBadGovernance protests that would have crippled the government.

"She used her personal resources to achieve this, while those in government were shying away from their responsibilities. This act of bravery and dedication demonstrates her commitment to the well-being of our nation,"he said.

The convener urged the President to consider the significance of Tejuosho's appointment, not only for their community but also for the country at large.

Dabai vowed that by granting their request, the President would be sending a powerful message about his commitment to inclusivity, equality and  promoting a more  representative and diverse leadership.

He equally said that the appointment of Halimat Tejuosho would also serve as a formal recognition of the valuable contributions PLWDs have made to Nigerian society, despite facing systemic marginalization and exclusion.

He explained that the recognition would promote a more inclusive and equitable society, where PLWDs would be valued and respected.

Furthermore, he said  the appointment would address the systemic marginalization faced by PLWDs, promoting equal access to opportunities and resources and also ensure that their community is represented and included in the decision-making process, thereby paving the way for a more inclusive political landscape.

Dabai expressed hope that the President would consider their request and take the necessary steps to ensure that their community is represented and included in the decision-making process.

Speaking further, Dabai said the Coalition does not view the appointment of Halimat Tejuosho as their right, but rather as a privilege if granted by the President.

"Despite this, we are urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act on our request with utmost urgency, recognizing the significant contributions Halimat Tejuosho has made to the community and the importance of her appointment for promoting inclusive leadership and addressing the systemic marginalization of PLWDs,"he said.
