Zangon Kataf Women Commit to Grassroots Solutions for Climate Resilience

By Sani Idris Abdulrahman

Women in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State have pledged to lead community-driven efforts to address the growing impacts of climate change.

Their commitment followed a two-day capacity-building workshop under the Women Empowerment and Climate Resilience Initiative (WECRI), implemented by Bridge That Gap Initiative through the Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement (PACE) Programme, funded by the UK International Development.

A facilitator, Daniel Abah, who spoke on community needs prioritisation, urged the women to form a local climate change network to articulate community concerns and influence policy at higher levels.

He said women’s active participation in advocacy would boost climate governance.

“When you mobilise yourselves at the community level, you can identify and engage with state environmental committees to influence decisions. From today, your task as community resilience advocates begins,” he told the participants.

For many attendees, the workshop was a transformational experience.

One of them, Myria Danjuma, said she gained practical knowledge on climate adaptation.

“I now understand the importance of tree planting, proper waste management, and ways to prevent flooding. I also learned that real change comes through collaboration with local leaders and community members,” she said.

Another participant, Rebecca Yohanna, described the training as eye-opening, especially on women’s roles in governance and development.

“I will advocate for women’s inclusion in my community and promote tree planting. We also need to reduce reliance on charcoal and firewood to protect our environment,” she said.

The workshop ended with renewed enthusiasm among the participants, who are now positioned to promote sustainable environmental practices and strengthen community resilience across Zangon Kataf.
