Radiology, eye of Medicine – Brig.-Gen. Ogoh

Brig.-Gen. Godwin Ogoh, Chief Medical Director(CMD) of the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, has described Radiology as  eye of Medicine which  plays vital role in disease detection.

Ogoh stated this during the International Day of Radiology/World Radiography Day event, held at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital Kaduna on Friday.

He stated that radiology was often called the “Eye of Medicine” as it provides insights into the body parts that were crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Ogoh said , “Radiology is often referred to as the “Eye of Medicine” because it provides a window into the body, allowing healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat diseases and conditions that would be difficult or impossible to detect otherwise.”

The News Agency of NIgeria(NAN), reports that the theme for this year’s celebration  is ‘Radiology and Global Health,: Averting prolonged  Machine Downtimes’.

Represented by Lt.-Col. Ugwunna Agwuoche, he appreciated the crucial role radiology plays in patient diagnosis and care.

Ogoh  also  acknowledged the growth of radiology and anticipated its expanding role in healthcare.

He reaffirmed his commitment to support the radiology department in maintaining equipment and improving resources.

Dr Jude Dimkpa, Head of the Radiology Department, 44 Reference Hospital spoke about  the world radiography day, highlighting advancements in technology such as AI, MRI, and digital radiography, which had enhanced diagnostic capabilities while reducing radiation exposure.

He stressed the importance of regular maintenance to prevent machine downtime, which can lead to delayed diagnosis and increased costs.

On impact of machine downtime, he said it affects patients, causing inconvenience, increased costs, and delayed diagnosis.

Dimkpa said  regular maintenance was crucial to prevent machine breakdowns and ensure continuous service.

Prof. Bashir Shidepo, an expert in Nanotechnology and Medical Physics, called for investments in medical imaging technologies and stressed the vital role Physicists play in advancing these technologies.

He urged collaboration between the government and private sector to address funding issues and improve access to modern imaging services.

Shidepo, a Professor at the Department of Physics, Kaduna State University,  emphasised the crucial role of physicists in designing and developing medical imaging technologies, highlighting the need for preventive maintenance to ensure optimal equipment performance.

He  stressed that Nigerian Universities have the potential to create innovative imaging technologies with proper funding and support.

Also, Dr Nwoke Ebele highlighted preventive maintenance of radiology equipment, stating that it was essential for quality healthcare delivery.

She advocated  strategic investments in local talent and efficient maintenance systems to ensure the reliability of diagnostic machines.

Ebele said the event  underscored the necessity of enhancing medical imaging capabilities in Nigeria for improved patient care and diagnostic outcomes.

She said, “By ensuring that our radiology equipment is functional and reliable, we are investing in accurate diagnostics, effective healthcare delivery, and the well-being of the Nigerian people".
