World Radiography Day: Kaduna radiographers advocate better diagnostic services

By Sani Idris Abdulrahman

The Kaduna State Branch of the Association of Radiographers of Nigeria has commemorated the 2025 World Radiography Day with a week-long set of activities focused on promoting the radiography profession, expanding public awareness, and strengthening healthcare delivery across the state.

The celebration was held under the theme, “Empowering Healthcare Through Imaging Excellence.”

The programme opened with a medical outreach that took place simultaneously at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria, Marshuaib Diagnostic Kaduna and Hazah Diagnostic Centre Zaria, where free ultrasound scan services were provided to members of the public.

The outreach brought relief to many patients who had delayed medical examinations due to financial constraints, highlighting the role of radiographers in early diagnosis, treatment planning, and improved health outcomes.

Chairman of the association in Kaduna State, Rad. Ahmad Adamu, expressed appreciation to the members and partners who made the outreach possible, describing it as a reflection of the association’s commitment to improving community health.

He explained that the outreach extended beyond hospital services to include sensitisation visits to secondary schools, where students were introduced to radiography as a vital and rewarding career.

He emphasized the need to inspire more young people, particularly girls, to consider entering the field to meet the growing demand for skilled radiographers in the health sector.

Rad. Adamu applauded the Central Organizing Committee and volunteers for their dedication and expressed confidence that the momentum from this year’s celebration would further strengthen the radiography profession in Kaduna State.

Treasurer of the association, Rad. Mahdi Shuaibu, noted that radiography forms the foundation of modern clinical decision-making, describing the profession as the eyes of medical practice.

He called for increased investment in radiography units, improved diagnostic equipment, and stronger support systems for radiographers across public hospitals in Kaduna State.

According to him, expanding imaging capacity will lower diagnostic costs, reduce delays in treatment and enhance the overall quality of healthcare delivery.

Radiography students from Kaduna State University and Ahmadu Bello University who participated in the celebration described the experience as motivating and educational.

They noted that the involvement of the main association in their activities provided mentorship, hands-on exposure and a clearer understanding of the evolving demands of professional radiographic practice.

The celebration also featured engagements with the media to raise awareness on the relevance of radiographers in the healthcare chain, sporting activities to promote unity among practitioners and students, and a scientific conference which served as a platform for professional development and discussions on advancements in imaging technology and clinical practice.

Throughout the event, the association reaffirmed its call for improved working conditions for radiographers, continuous training opportunities and the upgrading of diagnostic facilities in hospitals across the state.

It noted that efficient imaging services remain essential in the early detection and management of diseases, especially in a healthcare environment where accurate diagnosis can determine the success of treatment outcomes.

The activities drew significant participation from radiographers, healthcare professionals, students and members of the public, demonstrating the increasing recognition of radiography as a critical pillar of healthcare.
