Bilkisu International School, has won the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) 2025 national quiz competition on Legislature, Democracy and Governance.

In Kaduna, six secondary schools competed at the state level of the 2025 NILDS national quiz competition.

After several rounds of the intense competition, Government Secondary School Chindit Barracks Zaria, came second, while Government Secondary School Jaji came third.

The contest, organised by NILDS, was aimed at deepening students’ understanding of Nigeria’s democracy and legislative process.

Other participating schools included Government Secondary School Kakuri,   Beijing International School and Government Girls Secondary School Independence Way Kaduna.

Organisers said the winners would represent Kaduna State at the zonal competition later in the year.

At the competition on Thursday in Kaduna, the Director-General (D-G) of NILDS Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, said the quiz was designed to deepen knowledge of legislative and democratic governance at the secondary school level and to inspire young Nigerians to develop an interest in legislative governance.

Sulaiman, represented by the Quiz Coordinator in Kaduna, Ms Salamatu Yakubu, explained that as a critical organ of democracy, enhancing the knowledge of young Nigerians in legislative matters would not only promote inclusivity but also strengthen citizen participation in governance.

He noted that the competition, first introduced in 2016 with schools drawn only from the FCT, expanded nationwide in 2022 following the directive of the NILDS Governing Council.

He stressed that the 10th edition marked the fourth time the event was held at the national level.

The D-G,  therefore urged the students and their teachers to abide by the rules of the competition, reminding them that the initiative was designed to prepare young Nigerians for effective participation in governance and cultivate their interest in legislative activities.

The Commissioner of Education in Kaduna, Prof. Abubakar Sambo, said his ministry deeply valued the efforts of NILDS in promoting democratic education among young people, noting that with their partnership, the ministry had been able to contribute meaningfully to civic education initiatives.

Sambo, represented by the Deputy Director Public Schools, Aishatu Muhammad, explained that training youths on democracy and civic responsibility from an early stage was essential since democracy had become an integral part of Nigeria’s system of governance.

He noted that in the past, young Nigerians mostly aspired to become doctors, teachers, or lawyers, but now many were showing greater interest in politics because of the visible impacts of democracy in communities.

He stressed that democracy had led to development such as renovated roads, improved schools, and stronger communities, largely through the work of elected representatives, which made political leadership increasingly attractive to youths.

He asked the students to reflect on their aspirations, questioning whether they were being driven by luxury or by the genuine desire to contribute to community development.

The commissioner emphasised that becoming a senator, representative, or local leader required not just ambition but also discipline, education, and commitment, adding that education remained the foundation of effective representation.

He therefore urged the students to study hard, stay focused on their goals, and embrace education as the pathway to meaningful participation in democracy and national development.

He thanked NILDS for its continued collaboration with the Ministry of Education and wished all participants fruitful engagements and meaningful contributions toward the success of the competition.(NAN)
