The Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), Kaduna State chapter has conducted a tree planting campaign at the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), Kaduna.
The News Agency of NIgeria (NAN) reports that the the exercise was conducted at DICON Ordnance Factory Kakuri Area in Kaduna State on Thursday.
During the event, the Director-General of DICON, Maj.-Gen. Babatunde Alaya, emphasised the importance of tree planting for human health and the environment.
Alaya said, “Trees help to clean the air we breathe and also play a role in cleaning water during rainfall.
“Trees provide shelter for people and animals and three planting is a long-term investment for future generations.”
The director-general expressed support for the CSN’s initiative and encouraged everyone to contribute to improving environmental health.
The Chairperson of CSN, Kaduna State chapter, Emi-Johnson Umoeka, said that the planting of trees was to recognising chemists’ contribution to pollution control aimed at helping clean up the environment.
Umoeka said that their target was to
plant 500 trees in Kaduna State, focusing on public schools and road corridors.
“Other specific locations will be determined by the Commissioner for Environment, ” she said.
According to her, the aim was to combat air, soil, and water pollution and
create a healthier and safer city in the state.
“By planting trees, it will mitigate the effects of deforestation and pollution, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable environment, ” Umoeka said.
