BIP Project strengthens peace efforts in Kaduna

By Sani Idris Abdulrahman

The Building Inclusive Peace (BIP) Project has mobilised stakeholders to strengthen inclusive peace efforts in Kaduna.

Sophie Akut, Programme Manager of Gender Awareness Trust (GAT)-BIP in Kaduna and Katsina, said the project seeks to map peace structures and Women, Peace and Security (WPS) mechanisms.

Akut spoke on Tuesday in Kaduna during a roundtable on mapping peace and WPS mechanisms, stakeholders, priorities, and opportunities for promoting sustainable peace.

She explained that peace is vital as it provides a foundation for development, security, and human rights, while its absence results in violence, displacement, and abuses.

Akut stressed inclusivity in peace-building, saying women, youth, and marginalised groups must participate in peace processes to ensure rights are respected and needs addressed.

She said stakeholders at the roundtable, including government, traditional councils, and religious leaders, would help identify structures that strengthen peace and stability in Kaduna.

Akut urged stakeholders to ensure inclusivity in peace-building efforts, noting that every voice must be heard to create a peaceful and stable society.

Mr Terngu Gwar, State Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission in Kaduna, said the project aims to connect government and non-state actors to promote peace.

He explained that stakeholders would identify structures, assess their strengths and weaknesses, and collaborate to promote sustainable peace in Kaduna.

Gwar highlighted the diverse stakeholders, including officials, civil defence, and religious leaders, who would jointly promote peace and tolerance across the state.

A participant, Mrs Rabi Bala from Down Quarter, Kaduna South, said her community had been peaceful for decades in spite of its religious and ethnic diversity.

Bala lamented that insecurity, including gang violence, had recently disrupted the peace, affecting development and stability in her community.

She said the workshop would provide a platform for stakeholders to find practical solutions to security challenges facing her area.

Bala added that the workshop offered a valuable opportunity for stakeholders to unite in promoting peace and stability in Kaduna.

She expressed optimism that the project would deliver positive outcomes, contributing to a more peaceful Kaduna State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the project is supported by UK Aid, SPRiNG, TETRA TECH, GAT, and others.

The project is implemented in Zangon Kataf, Kaduna South, and Sabon Gari LGAs, focusing on fostering peace and stability in the state. (NAN)
