BEACON Calls for Support for Terrorism Survivors

In commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of Victims of Terrorism, a Kaduna-based NGO, BEACON of Transformative and Inclusive Development Center, has called for support for survivors of terrorism.

In a statement issued to newsmen on Thursday in Kaduna, Abigail Olatunde, the Executive Director of BEACON, said terrorism's impact lingers in hospital wards, abandoned schools, and quiet eyes of survivors, long after the world has moved on.

She explained that remembrance alone is not enough, as thousands of survivors live unseen, unsupported and unheard, which made true remembrance critically demanding responsibility.

Olatunde highlighted the plight of forgotten victims, including a child orphaned by an attack, a woman displaced and exposed to sexual violence, and a youth surviving with shrapnel in his leg.

She added that survivors face numerous challenges, including lack of access to psychosocial care, rehabilitation, and livelihood opportunities, with many living in fragile communities.

The executive director noted that even in countries with frameworks, most survivors are excluded from national development plans, disability registries, and peacebuilding programs, leading to political silence.

Olatunde emphasized the need to recognize terrorism's psychological, generational, and systemic impact and invest in inclusive trauma recovery, not just military budgets.

She called for ensuring that vulnerable groups are part of rehabilitation, policy, and remembrance, as memory without justice is performative and healing without access is a myth.

The BEACON executive director demanded inclusion and investment in trauma recovery, education, and community rebuilding, believing that remembrance must lead to reform.

Olatunde concluded that the International Day of Remembrance should be more than a day of mourning, but a day to say "Never again" must include the living.
