In efforts towards combating climate change and promoting a greener environment, an NGO, Centre for Water and Environment Development (CWED) has distributed no fewer than 500 economic tree seedlings to residents Lere LGA of Kaduna state.
The NGO, also organised a football competition tagged "Green Game Championship" for youths in Lere communities, Lere LGA.
The event which saw enthusiastic participation from local residents, political, traditional and religious leaders, aimed to portray importance of cooperation showcased in football competition, which could be applicable in fighting climate change.
The Programme Officer of CWED, Mrs Lydia Saleh, said the event was designed to help restore environmental balance, curb the effects of global warming, and promote sustainable living.
"Climate change is not a distant threat, it is already affecting us. By planting trees, we are taking a simple but powerful step to protect our environment and our future,”she said.
Saleh explained that the green project, CWED's community-driven initiative, was aimed at enhancing and sensitising communities on climate change, and also to have mitigating mechanisms to protect the environment from climate change.
She mentioned the tree seedlings distributed to include bananas, mangoes, guavas, oranges, soursop, among others.
The programme officer explained that their choice of distributing economic trees was for the health, economic and food security benefits embedded in them.
She frowned against felling of existing trees, urging the beneficiaries to nurture the plants to maturity for their benefit.
"Environmentally responsible citizens adopt sustainable habits, using reusable bags and water bottles, buying eco-friendly products, reducing meat consumption, segregating waste, and promoting environmental sustainability in their communities,"she said.
Speaking to newsmen at the sideline, the Executive Chairman of Lere LGA, Jafaru Ahmed, highlighted the importance of tree planting in combating global warming and erosion.
Ahmed, represented by his vice, Dr. Kallen Audu, explained that trees serve as windbreaks, reduce erosion, and provide numerous benefits, including air, fruits, and medicine, making them crucial for the community's well-being.
Ahmed said that the local government is implementing tree planting programs in schools to inculcate the habit in children, promoting sustainability and environmental awareness from a young age.
He equally said the government is also taking steps to ensure program sustainability, including buying more trees and implementing water and sanitation interventions to support the initiative.
He thanked CWED for the trees, while urging the beneficiaries of to ensure their survival.
Shehu Lere, the Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH) Coordinator of Lere LGA, emphasised the importance of environmental sustainability initiatives, such as tree planting and waste management, in combating climate change and promoting community well-being.
Lere noted that such programmes not only enhance environmental awareness but also foster community engagement and cooperation.
An expert, Aminu Salihu, the Branch Manager of Teku Farms in Kaduna, said apart from the benefit of fruits, all the trees have medicinal value.
The beneficiaries, thanked CWED for the gesture, expressing commitment to nurturing the trees and adopting eco-friendly habits to protect their environment.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), report that CWED, in its intensified environmental efforts, also distributed; 400 tree seedlings to Kagarko LGA, 20 in Chikun LGA , Sabo community of Kaduna state and 1,000 in Adamawa state.
This, was aimed at promoting sustainability and community engagement in the fight against climate change across multiple regions.(NAN)
