The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) RS1.15 Sabon Tasha Unit Command, on Monday conducted the 2025 Ember months safety campaign and medical outreach at Refinery Junction Motor Park, Kaduna.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise was in collaboration with Guinness Nigeria and a Non Governmental Organisation, Brighter Youth and Women Initiative (BYWIN).
The theme of this year’s campaign is: ‘Take Responsibility for Your Safety, Avoid Distracted Driving’.
ACC Saingnom Ambisa, the Unit Commander, RS1.15 Sabon Tasha Unit Command, said the exercise targeted commercial drivers and passengers amid increased festive-season travels on major Kaduna corridors.
She said the initiative sought to eradicate road crashes through discipline, alertness, and collective responsibility among drivers, passengers, unions, and transport stakeholders.
Ambisa warned drivers against overloading and mix-loading, urging them to divide excess luggage for subsequent trips to prevent vehicle imbalance, brake failures, tyre bursts, and other avoidable fatalities.
She advised the drivers to avoid over eating before journeys to prevent drowsiness, saying, “whenever sleep sets in, motorists should park safely, rest adequately, and continue only when fully alert.
Ambisa emphasised passenger responsibility, urging commuters to speak up against dangerous driving while drivers must firmly reject excess luggage and unsafe demands that compromise road safety.
She cautioned against drinking and driving, while encouraging drivers to drive to arrive alive.
“I want to remind all road users that safer roads ensure fuller lives; only the living celebrate destinations, ” she said.
Ambisa discouraged passengers from instigating speeding, stressing that patience saves lives and protects families waiting at home during the busy ember months.
The Founder of BYWIN, Mrs Dorathy Dalung, thanked members of the motor park union for hosting the programme and commended partners for prioritising community’s well-being.
Dalung said BYWIN focuses on empowering youth and women while strongly opposing drug abuse, including shisha, cigarettes, and alcohol misuse that impaired judgment and endanger lives on the road.
She urged drivers and passengers to drink responsibly and remember the families left behind.
“Always bear in mind that every journey involves people who must safely meet others and return home alive, ” she said..
Also speaking, Mr Laurence Amadu, Guinness Nigeria Business Development Manager, described safety as fundamental.
He urged drivers to stay safe so that they could return to warm embrace of their families and loved ones.
Amadu advised them to carry out routine vehicle checks, and warned against managing faulty vehicles.
He stressed the need for regular use of seatbelts, and reminded drivers that money should never be pursued at the expense of human life.
He reiterated Guinness Nigeria’s commitment to safety, urging responsible drinking; avoidance of morning alcohol; choosing water while driving; and rejecting the dangerous practice of taking “one for the road.”
Also speaking, Naomi Danjuma, Matron of Maraban Rido Primary Health Care Centre said the outreach strengthened preventive healthcare by detecting silent conditions early among drivers and passengers.
Danjuma, represented by Angella Bako, encouraged the participants to prioritise regular medical checks, healthy lifestyles, and prompt treatment, adding that early detection reduces emergencies and improves productivity.
The Secretary of the motor park, Jagaba Habila, thanked the organisers and urged drivers to sustain safe practices; cooperate with safety agencies; and protect passengers daily.
NAN reports that the outreach featured free medical checks, including blood pressure monitoring, malaria screening, weight assessment, and hepatitis B and C tests for drivers and passengers.(NAN)
