Pulse.ng : Don seeks subsidy on Internet, ICT integration

A don, Prof. Philip Achimugu, has called on the Nigerian government to provide greater support for the provision of network infrastructure and reduce the cost of data.

Achimugu is a Professor of Computer Science/Software Engineering and Dean. Faculty of Computing, Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna.

He made the call at AFIT’s first inaugural lecture on Thursday in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the inaugural lecture was titled “Poverty Amidst of Riches: Can Software and Information Technology Renew Our Hope”.

Achimugu urged the government to prioritise local content development and encourage the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), into every sector of the economy.

He emphasised that such measures would make ICT services more accessible and affordable, fostering technological development and innovation across the country.

The dean added, “The government should support the provision of reliable network infrastructure, reduce the cost of data, and promote local content development.”

Achimugu stressed that these actions would open up opportunities for growth and job creation.

He also advocated stronger collaboration between schools, government, and the private sector to drive technological advancements as well as provide practical solutions to real-life challenges.

According to Achimugu, such partnerships are essential for the success of the nation’s digital economy.

Earlier, the Commandant of AFIT, AVM Sani Rabe, praised the Institute’s achievements and growth.

Rabe highlighted the institution’s contributions to technology development, including the successful completion of unmanned drone projects and cybersecurity innovations.

He said the lecture aligned with President Bola Tinibu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The President’s goal of generating technical talents will facilitate the creation of jobs for our teeming youths.

“As an institute of technology, we have the capacity and competence to contribute meaningfully to the actualisation of this vision , “he said.

Rabe reiterated AFIT’s commitment to supporting the government’s vision for economic development through technological advancement and youth empowerment.
