The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has pledged to offer more purposeful leadership to engender collective action by all personnel of the Nigerian Army in the defence of the country’s territorial integrity.
The COAS gave the assurance on Tuesday in a lecture he delivered to students of Senior Course 47 and Junior Course 99/2025 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC) Jaji.
The lecture is titled, ‘Nigeria’s National Security and Defence: Nigerian Army’s Mission Statement and the Chief of Army Staff’s Command Philosophy’.
Lieutenant General Oluyede outlined his command philosophy within the framework of Nigeria’s national security landscape, which he said, was important in providing the personnel with unambiguous goals and leadership intent.
The COAS said that the Nigerian Army’s mission is “to win all land battles in defence of the territorial integrity of Nigeria, protect her national interests, and accomplish other tasks in aid of civil authority.
“This mission aligns with the constitutional responsibilities of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, underscoring the Army’s dedication to defending the nation against threats while fostering unity, peace, and economic development.”
He added that his command philosophy is grounded in core values of ethical conduct, accountability, and the “soldiers first” principle.
Lieutenant General Oluyede highlighted the necessity of exemplary leadership, mutual trust, and unity of purpose, emphasising that commanders at all levels must lead by example and take responsibility for their actions.
“Leadership is the cornerstone of a functional and effective Army; it establishes the standard for discipline, encourages innovation, and nurtures a collective sense of purpose,” he added.
The COAS also addressed the evolving nature of warfare, including cyber threats and information warfare, and the need for inter-service cooperation and coordination among security agencies.
He however acknowledged logistical constraints and the impact of multiple troop deployments, but assured that the challenges will be addressed.
