The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has donated communication gadgets to Community Peace and Resilience Committees in eight Local Government Areas in Katsina to strengthen early warning systems.
The distribution held in Danmusa on Wednesday, is aimed at improving early warning and early response mechanisms to enhance community-based conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts.
The intervention was carried out under the Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response and Resilience (CPCRR) Programme founded by the European Union Foreign Policy Instrument.
Speaking at the event, the Project Assistant, Mr Seth Elisha, said the programme is implemented by IOM in partnership with Mercy Corps and the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD).
According to him, the devices which include mobile phones and power banks, were expected to enhance the operational capacity of Community Peace and Resilience Committees across the benefiting areas.
He said the beneficiaries were drawn from Jibia, Batsari, Danmusa, Kankara, Sabuwa, Safana, Dandume and Faskari Local Government Areas.
Elisha said the gadgets would enable committee members to promptly report Early Warning and Early Response (EWER) incidents, particularly farmer-herder conflicts and other emerging security threats for timely intervention.
According to him, strengthening communication among community-based peace actors remains critical to preventing violence and promoting peaceful coexistence.
“The gadgets will improve information sharing, facilitate timely reporting of incidents and support effective responses to emerging security concerns within the communities.
“The overall objective of the CPCRR programme being implemented in Zamfara and Katsina states is to reinforce peace and socio-economic stability in Nigeria.
“This will be achieved through integrated interventions that address the root causes of conflict, strengthen governance, promote social cohesion, and enhance community resilience,” he said.
Some beneficiaries commended IOM and its partners for the intervention, describing it as a major boost to grassroots peacebuilding initiatives.
Mrs Rahila Lawal, women representative of the Danmusa Community Peace and Resilience Committee, said the devices would improve communication among committee members and enhance prompt reporting of security-related incidents.
Also speaking, Mr Isah Usman, community Secretary, expressed appreciation to the organisation, saying the support would strengthen the committee’s efforts in promoting peaceful coexistence and protecting lives and property.
Similarly, Mr Zahradeen Saleh, Secretary of the Ayara Community Peace and Resilience Committee, said the gadgets would improve the committee’s ability to respond swiftly to emerging conflicts.
They beneficiaries pledged to make effective use of the communication devices to support peacebuilding efforts and foster harmony in their respective communities.
