The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone A, has faulted the leadership of NANS Zone C for distancing itself from the planned protest demanding the resignation of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Zone A Secretary General, Comrade Ibrahim Bashir, the association reaffirmed its call for the Minister’s resignation, citing grave allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
The statement accused Mr. Wike of failing to uphold the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability expected of a high-ranking federal official.
Bashir described Zone C’s decision to dissociate from the protest as a misunderstanding of the Federal Capital Territory’s status, stressing that the FCT belongs to all Nigerians, not a particular geopolitical zone.
According to him, NANS operates under a national mandate to defend public integrity and ensure good governance across all federal institutions, beyond regional or localized student concerns.
The association alleged that the Minister and his family own undeclared properties in Winter Springs, Florida, USA, acquired between 2021 and 2023, in violation of asset declaration laws.
It also cited allegations of irregular land allocations and the forceful seizure of land belonging to the University of Abuja, which the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) condemned as a threat to research and innovation.
ASUU President, Dr. Chris Piwuna, reportedly told the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund that the encroachment would hinder the university’s academic development.
Bashir further recalled unresolved allegations of diversion of $300 million meant for Ogoniland environmental remediation during Wike’s tenure as Governor of Rivers State.
He accused some student leaders of compromising the struggle for material gain and urged them to reject inducements from politically exposed persons.
He reaffirmed that the “Wike Must Go” protest would hold as planned, describing it as a legitimate action to restore integrity and accountability in the administration of the FCT.
