The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone A, has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Yemi Cardoso, to address allegations of financial recklessness and administrative irregularities within the bank.
In a statement issued to newsmen on Monday in Kaduna by the NANS Secretary General, Zone 'A', Comrade Ibrahim Bashir, said the association is demanding that Governor Cardoso provide a detailed explanation regarding the hiring process, salary structure, and roles of certain consultants, notably Nkiru Balonwu and Daphne Dafinone, who allegedly receive exorbitant salaries of up to ₦50 million monthly.
Bashir noted that the amount, surpassed the earnings of senior CBN officials.
He added that the consultants were reportedly exercising undue influence over directors, thereby disrupting the bank’s governance structure.
As an association committed to accountability, transparency, and the protection of national resources, the Secretary General said the association finds the revelations deeply troubling and unacceptable.
"The CBN, as Nigeria’s apex financial institution, must set a standard for integrity and responsible leadership,"he said.
He, therefore, demanded that Governor Yemi Cardoso to publicly address the allegations within seven days, by providing a detailed explanation regarding the hiring process, salary structure, and roles of the consultants.
He also demanded the immediate termination of the consultants’ contracts and a comprehensive audit of all consultant contracts issued under Governor Cardoso’s administration and made public.
Bashir emphasised that in an advent of failure by Governor Cardoso to meet the demands within the stipulated seven-day period, NANS would not hesitate to take action.
"We will mobilize students and youth across all regions for peaceful demonstrations, petitions, and other lawful measures to demand accountability from the CBN leadership.
"We refuse to allow impunity and financial mismanagement to thrive while millions of Nigerian students struggle with economic hardship, unemployment, and inadequate educational funding.
"We remains committed to the defense of Nigerian students and masses as well the principles of good governance,"he said.
He urged all stakeholders, civil society organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to join them in demanding for accountability.
