Kaduna Communities Embrace SURWASH Programme for Improved Water, Sanitation

The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), with support from the State Project Implementation Unit (SPIU), has successfully conducted a comprehensive screening and engagement exercise in Igabi and Soba Local Government Areas as part of the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme.

The exercise aimed to sensitize community members about the SURWASH programme’s objectives, benefits, and expected outcomes, as well as identify potential environmental and social impacts related to the implementation of the programme.

In a statement issued to newsmen in Kaduna, Affiong Edim, the Communication Officer, State Program Implementation Unit SURWASH, Kaduna, said
the engagement proved highly effective, with the team actively communicating the significance of community involvement in the institutionalization of the programme for ownership and long-term sustainability.

She added that the community members demonstrated a profound understanding of their roles and responsibilities in the collaborative effort.

As a result of the engagement, Edim said the community members made important commitments, including providing a conducive environment for contractors, protecting equipment and facilities, and ensuring long-term maintenance of the facilities post-construction.

She noted that the commitments were pivotal to the success and sustainability of the SURWASH programme, thereby marking a significant step towards improving water supply and sanitation standards in the region.

The Communication Officers of the State Implementation Unit of SURWASH and KADRUWASSA expressed optimism about the positive outcomes of the initiative, adding that the engagements reflect the community’s readiness to collaborate for better water and sanitation facilities.

This initiative underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between government agencies and local communities in achieving sustainable development goals, particularly in the areas of water supply and sanitation.
