Understanding passengers rights vital to reducing road crashes - FRSC
By Zubairu Idris
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), says it focuses attention on educating passengers to understand their rights, not to allow themselves to be killed by drivers’ recklessness.
The FRSC Corps Marshall, Mr Shehu Mohammed, stated this at a press briefing, through the Katsina Sector Commander, Mr. Aliyu Ma’aji, at the launch of the 2024 Ember Months Campaign, on Tuesday in Katsina.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of this year’s ember months campaign is: “Speak up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers”.
He quoted the Corps Marshal as saying that the new policy would not only enhance the road transportation sector by changing drivers’ behavior but would also position Nigeria as a safety conscious nation in the global community.
Ma’aji said that the corps had revised its public education strategy by introducing new dynamic approaches.
“These included mega town hall meetings, motorcades, transit, rest areas, and loading bays advocacy.
“The strategy arose from the need to engage passengers and encourage them to assert their rights, thereby curbing drivers’ excesses, because it is on record that more passengers are killed in road crashes than drivers.
“Hence the need to take up the responsibility of being more vigilant while on transit. While various factors contribute to these crashes, driver’s behavior and passengers inference to reckless driving are major contributors,” he said.
According to him, that is why they are focusing on re-educating passengers and helping them to understand their rights.
“The agreement between the driver and the passenger is clear. The driver must ensure that the passengers reach their destination safely.
“Passengers have the right not to be injured, killed, harassed, or have their rights violated. So, by empowering passengers, we aim to reduce road crashes,” he said.
