The member representing Kajuru Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Usman Stingo, has on Friday donated no fewer than 300 economic and environmental trees to ECWA Kasuwan Magani District Church Council (DCC).
The donation formed part of activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day (WED) at the ECWA Kasuwan Magani DCC Secretariat in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Stingo, who is also Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, said the world set aside the day to promote environmental protection.
He said climate change has become a reality that requires collective action to reduce its devastating effects on humanity and the environment.
According to him, climate change has contributed to irregular rainfall patterns, desertification, shrinking water levels and the destruction of flora and fauna.
The lawmaker described climate change as a hydra-headed monster that must be confronted through the collective efforts of governments, institutions, communities and individuals.
He said rainy seasons previously commenced around April and lasted until October or November, providing favourable conditions for farming activities.
Stingo, however, noted that the situation has changed significantly due to the impact of climate change.
He said throughout May, fewer than one-tenth of farmers in Kajuru were able to cultivate or plant crops because of delayed rainfall.
The lawmaker added that as of June 5, only a few farmers had commenced planting, highlighting the growing threat climate change poses to food production.
He said the world now recognises the negative consequences of climate change on livelihoods and sustainable development.
Stingo explained that the tree-planting exercise was organised in collaboration with the leadership of ECWA Kasuwan Magani DCC.
He said the initiative seeks to improve the environment around the church secretariat and strengthen resilience against climate-related disasters.
According to him, some of the trees will serve as windbreakers to reduce the impact of destructive winds and rainstorms common in the area.
He said the seedlings include economic species such as mango, guava and cashew, alongside mahogany and umbrella trees.
The lawmaker noted that no fewer than 300 trees would be planted within the church premises and surrounding environment.
He urged church leaders to ensure the exercise goes beyond ceremonial activities by nurturing the trees to maturity.
Stingo expressed confidence that within four to five years, the trees would transform the secretariat and provide shade across different sections of the facility.
The District Secretary of ECWA Kasuwan Magani DCC, Rev. Alari Maro, appreciated God and commended the lawmaker for the intervention.
Maro said the church secretariat is situated on a hill and experiences frequent windstorm disasters almost every year.
He described the tree-planting initiative as timely and capable of reducing environmental challenges affecting the church premises.
The cleric also expressed optimism that the trees would provide both economic and environmental benefits to the church and surrounding community.
He thanked Stingo for supporting the church and contributing to efforts aimed at protecting the environment and mitigating climate change.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the WED 2026, has the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”(NAN)
