Kaduna cycling association, FRSC urge residents to embrace bicycles for health, cleaner air

 The Kaduna State Cycling Association, in conjunction with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has urged residents to adopt regular cycling for healthy living.

Samaila Usman, Director of Sports Facilities and Technical Services at the Ministry of Sports Development, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna on Wednesday.

According to the director, the celebration being held every June 3, is in line with the United Nations-approved observance.

“Bicycling is a total way of life and key to physical fitness and human wellbeing.

“World Bicycle Day recognises the bicycle as an affordable, reliable, and sustainable mode of transportation.

“It highlights how cycling reduces carbon emissions, improves physical and mental health, and promotes inclusive, accessible mobility for all,” he said.

He observed that cycling benefits more than just physical health, adding that doctors say it reduces stress by stimulating the body to produce endorphins.

“Hormones that relieve stress, reduce pain, and help fight depression.

“Experts say cycling promotes mindfulness, where you focus on the present rather than worrying about daily concerns, which helps reduce anxiety.

“Many people also enjoy the sense of achievement they get from hitting self-imposed cycling goals,” he added.

Usman urged residents, especially youths, to embrace cycling as it cuts carbon emissions and helps combat the climate crisis, and improves cardiovascular health.

Othe benefits, he said, it lowers the risk of lifestyle diseases, and provides an economical transportation alternative that fosters social inclusion.

He said the association plans to expand cycling to all 23 local government areas of the state.

“We have excelled in cycling in Kaduna and want more people to join the sport.

“Some use bicycles for livelihood, while others use them for exercise. We have safer roads for cycling in the state,” assured.

The director also called on private organisations and individuals to partner with the state to promote cycling. (NAN)
