The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), in collaboration with Kaduna Polytechnic, has commenced a National Curriculum Development Workshop aimed at producing a zero draft curriculum for National Diploma (ND) programmes in Technical Arabic and Technical French.
The workshop marks a significant step towards expanding technical and vocational education in Nigeria by integrating foreign language proficiency with industry-relevant skills required in today's global economy.
The Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, noted that the proposed programmes are designed to equip students with practical communication competencies in Arabic and French while addressing workforce needs in sectors such as diplomacy, international trade, education, tourism and regional integration.
The curriculum development exercise brings together experts from academia, industry, professional bodies and relevant government agencies to ensure that the programmes meet national education standards and labour market demands.
Participants are expected to review existing language education frameworks, identify skill gaps and develop competency-based curricula that align with the National Skills Qualification Framework and international best practices.
According to NBTE, the introduction of Technical Arabic and Technical French programmes will enhance employability, promote multilingual competencies and strengthen Nigeria's engagement with Arabic-speaking and Francophone countries.
The workshop also reflects NBTE's commitment to continuous curriculum review and the development of innovative programmes that respond to emerging national and global opportunities.
At the end of the exercise, a zero draft curriculum document will be produced for further validation and stakeholder input before approval and implementation across eligible polytechnics and technical institutions in the country.
