The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) Corps members posted to Katsina State have appealed to Gov. Dikko Radda to introduce a monthly allowance to support their welfare during the service year.
They made the appeal during a side discussion with our correspondent after the swearing in of the 2026 Batch A Stream one corps members in Katsina on Friday.
According to them, the Governor should consider the rising economic challenges, saying that the allowance, if introduced would reduce their transportation and feeding expenses.
The corps members said that the federal allowance alone may not sustain them, especially in the face of the rising inflation in the country.
They said that many states across the country had already provided additional stipends to the corps members, a gesture they described as both motivating and supportive.
Some of the corps members explained that a state allowance would not only ease their financial burden but also boost morale and productivity in their various places of primary assignment.
The corps members further emphasised that their request was made with respect and understanding of the government’s responsibilities.
Earlier in his remarks, the Governor told the corps members that Katsina was NYSC-friendly, and assured them a conducive atmosphere throughout their service year.
Represented by his Deputy, Faruk Lawal-Jobe, Radda said, “no doubt, you will find Katsina a home away from home as our people are generally receptive and accommodating.
“No matter the situation you may find yourselves during the service year, I urge you to see this rare opportunity as a mark of honour and recognition of your worth to the fatherland.
“During your stay in this camp and throughout your service year, you are to shun cultism, political as well as religious intolerance or any other form of anti-social behavior.”
In his welcome address, the NYSC Coordinator in the state, Ibrahim Sa’idu, said that so far about 945 corps members were registered, out of which 428 were females and 517 males.
On behalf of the NYSC Director General, Brig,-Gen. Olakunle Oluseye-Nafiu, Sai’du commended the governor for supporting three corps members recently affected by a fire incident, with N500,000 each.
He said, “I wish to inform this gathering that the governor had also approved the general renovation of the camp facilities including the long-awaited dilapidated male hostels and staff quarters.
“In addition, the governor had approved the purchase of thousands of mattresses and plastic chairs for the corps members’ use in the orientation camp.”
