The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has launched a sensitization campaign in Kano State to raise awareness on thematic areas initiated by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The programme, themed “Nationwide Sensitization on Five Thematic Areas”, was held on Tuesday at the Mambayya House Conference Hall in Kano metropolis.

The event brought together stakeholders including non-governmental organizations, traditional rulers, security agencies, persons with special needs, youths, journalists, and community leaders.

Speaking at the event, Alhaji Rabi’u Ado, NOA State Director in Kano, explained that the purpose of the sensitization was to enlighten the public on key government initiatives.

He highlighted the areas as government policies, national value re-orientation for students, security awareness, the Nigerian identity project and national symbols, as well as flood mitigation and disaster preparedness.

Ado stressed that the sensitization exercise was being held across all 36 states and the FCT to create awareness, strengthen patriotism, and provide platforms for citizens to engage government on policies and programmes.

He added that NOA had created a website and partnered with media organizations to provide feedback channels between citizens and government.

On social concerns, the Kano NOA office condemned the rising trend among secondary school students celebrating graduation with “sign-in, sign-out” or “Marker’s Day” activities.

Ado described the practice as alien to the state’s cultural and religious values and called on government authorities to take decisive steps to curb the trend.

The North-West Zonal Director of the NOA, Malam Hamisu Abubakar Mayere, said the agency is committed to promoting positive values and behaviors among Nigerian youths.

He added that the “sign-in, sign-out” practice is not only unbecoming but also undermines the moral fabric of the society.

He explained that the NOA is working to ensure that young people are equipped with the right values and skills to become responsible citizens.

He lamented that if left unchecked, such practices could lead to a breakdown in social order and values.

He therefore, commended the Kano NOA office for speaking out against the trend and called for collective action to address the issue.

He urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to work together to promote positive values and behaviors among young people.

Mayere called on government authorities to take decisive steps to curb the trend and ensure that schools promote values that are consistent with Nigerian culture and traditions.

The Director-General of NOA, Lanre Issa-Onilu, reaffirmed the agency’s mandate to sensitize Nigerians on government policies and pledged to intensify efforts nationwide.

Issa-Onilu, represented by Barrister William Manya Dogo,  urged participants to spread the message within their communities and commended the federal government for revitalizing the agency.

The District Head of Dala and Dangaladiman Kano, Alhaji Yahaya Inuwa Abbas, commended NOA for the initiative and urged sustainability of the sensitization drive.

Presentations were also delivered by representatives of the Kano State Police Command, National Population Commission, State Ministry of Education, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

The programme concluded with an interactive session featuring questions, comments, and observations from participants.
