Comr. Jabir Aminu Maiturare, a concerned advocate for the rights and well-being of students has expressed deep concern over the recent attack and abduction of students at Federal University, Gusau (FUG), Zamfara State.
Maiturare who is also the Vice Presidential aspirant of the National Association of Nigerian Student’s Union Government, bore his mind in Statement made available to newsmen on Saturday in Kaduna.
According to the Advocate, the vicious attacks had unfortunately become a recurrent decimal.
“It is disheartening to witness the students of FUG becoming soft targets for banditry attacks.
“Attacks on students and places of learning are utterly unacceptable under any guise or circumstances,” he said.
Maiturare added that such repeated onslaughts not only posed immediate threats to the lives and safety of students and staff but also had a devastating, long-term physical and psychological impacts on the entire educational community.
“Our educational institutions should be safe sanctuaries, fostering an environment conducive to learning, growth, and development.
“The security and well-being of students and staff must be a top priority for both the government and the university management,” he noted.
Maiturare, however, urged governments at all levels, as well as the University Management, to move beyond mere condemnation and take decisive action to address the ugly trend.
“It is imperative to provide safer corridors for students and staff, ensuring their protection and creating an atmosphere that encourages uninterrupted academic pursuits.
“The safety and security of our educational institutions should never be compromised,” he said.
Maiturare urged all stakeholders to collaborate, employing all necessary resources and strategies to put an end to the attacks.
“The government, security agencies, and the university administration should work hand in hand to enhance security measures, intelligence gathering, and proactive interventions to prevent future incidents, Maiturare added.
He, then, expressed solidarity with the affected students, their families, and the entire FUG community, adding, “it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every student can pursue their education without fear or harm.
“We call on the government and all relevant authorities to expedite efforts and prioritize the safety of our educational institutions.
“Together, we can create an environment where students can thrive, learn, and contribute to the progress of our nation,” he noted.
