The Kaduna State Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure has commenced a three-day training on sustainable community Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) promotion to strengthen service delivery across the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop, held in Zaria, was organised in collaboration with Amorah Hydrogen Links Ltd and the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) Programme.
Speaking at the opening on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Public Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ibrahim Hamza, said the training was designed to position Kaduna State for effective SURWASH implementation.
He was represented by the Director of Water Supply, Mr Usman Ibrahim.
According to him, the programme will equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to implement urban and rural WASH initiatives, promote best practices in operations and monitoring, and ensure the sustainability of infrastructure and services.
He added that the ministry remained committed to strengthening institutional capacity, improving coordination mechanisms, and enhancing partnerships to boost public health outcomes and the overall quality of life for residents.
Ibrahim said the training would deepen participants’ understanding of the link between water supply, sanitation, hygiene, and public health, while covering climate-resilient water safety planning, WASH in emergency settings, gender inclusion, financing, and transparency.
He noted that Kaduna was among the first seven states participating in the SURWASH programme and urged participants to actively engage in the sessions to improve implementation and service delivery.
Also speaking, Hassan Ahmed, a resource person on project coordination, emphasised the importance of clearly defined roles and responsibilities using the RACI matrix—Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, and Informed—for effective project execution.
In a presentation on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in WASH delivery, Mr Sani Dauda Ahmed described PPP as a strategic approach that leverages private sector expertise and investment to complement government efforts.
He stressed the need for transparency, accountability, and strong regulatory frameworks to ensure sustainability, while participants pledged to apply lessons learned to advance sustainable WASH services in Kaduna State. (NAN)
