WASA 2025: Army strengthens unity, Civil–Military ties, ex-NDA boss




Retired Maj.-Gen. Abdul Ibrahim, has commended the Army for promoting unity, cultural integration and civil–military cooperation through the annual event.

Ibrahim made the commendation at the 2025 West African Social Activity (WASA)at the  grand finale of the combined Jaji Military Cantonment on Saturday in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NÀN) reports that Ibrahim was the ex -Commander, Infantry Corps Nigerian Army and also ex-Commandant Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).

He  praised the Commander, Infantry Corps and participating formations for organising a colourful and well-coordinated ceremony.

Ibrahim said the cultural displays, traditional cuisines and interaction among officers, soldiers, families and guests reflected the spirit of unity and camaraderie within the Nigerian Army.

According to him, WASA goes beyond celebration, serving as a reminder that the Armed Forces draw strength from Nigeria’s diversity and the support of the society they protect.

He  expressed particular appreciation for the joint nature of the 2025 event, which involved Headquarters Infantry Corps Centre, Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Warrant Officers Academy, HQ ICC Administrative Battalion, 4 Demonstration Battalion, 601 Aviation Unit and Composite Base Depot Jaji.

Ibrahim described the collaboration as evidence of unity of purpose, synergy and collective responsibility within the Army.

He also commended officers and soldiers of the Infantry Corps for their sacrifices in addressing the nation’s security challenges, noting that events such as WASA boost morale and reinforce pride in service.

The retired General paid glowing tributes to the families of military personnel, describing them as “silent heroes” whose support strengthens the resolve of troops in the line of duty.

The guest further urged sustained civil–military cooperation, emphasising that peace and security were collective responsibilities.

He called on officers and soldiers to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and professionalism demonstrated during the celebration.

Earlier, the Commander, Infantry Corps,  Maj.-Gen. Godwin Mutkut, described  WASA as one of the most cherished traditions of the Nigerian Army, promoting unity, cultural heritage and family bonding.

Mutkut said the event marked the formal end of activities for the 2025 training and operational year, adding that WASA symbolised the Nigerian Army’s unity in diversity.

According to him, the joint celebration brought together officers, soldiers, trainees and families from Headquarters Infantry Corps Centre, Nigerian Army School of Infantry, Warrant Officers Academy, HQ ICC Administrative Battalion, 4 Demonstration Battalion, 601 Aviation Unit and Composite Base Depot Jaji.

The commander said WASA was instituted to allow personnel to interact with their families and host communities after a year of demanding operations, training and national service.

He said that 2025 was marked by significant challenges and achievements, with Army personnel demonstrating courage, professionalism and resilience in addressing evolving security threats across the country.

The commander commended officers, soldiers and trainees within Jaji Cantonment for their discipline and commitment, describing the Infantry as the backbone of the Nigerian Army.

He also acknowledged the sacrifices of military families, particularly wives and children, noting that their support contributed significantly to operational effectiveness.

The commander highlighted the cultural performances and exhibition of traditional cuisines as reminders of Nigeria’s diversity and shared destiny.

He appreciated the presence of traditional rulers, community leaders and other dignitaries, describing it as a demonstration of cordial civil–military relations.

The commander further commended members of the planning committee and personnel involved in organising the event for their dedication.

He urged the participants to use the occasion to strengthen bonds and unity within the Nigerian Army family.

NAN also reports that awards were given to the soldiers who distinguished themselves in 2025.
