The Concerned Northern Group for National Unity and Integration, has commended the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibril, for his role in halting the controversial tax reform bill.
According to the group, Jibril interfaced with the Presidency, the Northern Caucus of the Senate and other stakeholders towards halting action on the bills.
Briefing newsmen in Katsina on Thursday, the group's spokesman, Hamza Katsina, said the Senate leadership has acted in the interest of justice and equity by constituting a committee to meet with the Executive Arm to resolve the controversies surrounding the bill.
He said that Jibril has demonstrated leadership by acting in the wider public interest and responding to concerns raised by the Northern Governors' Forum, northern caucuses within the National Assembly, traditional leaders and youth groups.
He however expressed the group's disagreement with individuals that attempted to politicise the Senate debate on the bills.
"It is disturbing to observe how politicians and political interest groups used the imbroglio on the tax reform bill to pass hasty judgement on some northern leaders that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the region's interest is protected.
"We urge them to always look at national issues from the development point of view, rather than use them as tools for politicisation.
"It is necessary to point out that Jibrin held meetings round-the-clock with key figures at the presidency, the national assembly, some northern governors, opinion leaders and key Senate leaders to arrive at the current position which is in the collective interest", Katsina said.
He called on the deputy senate president to continue to take a firm stand on issues that have a far-reaching impact on the unity, peace, well-being, prosperity, and overall development of the country.
Recalls that the Senate on Wednesday has suspended action on the tax reforms bills.
The Senate further instructed its Committee on Finance to stay action on the public hearing pending the time the agitation in the public space was addressed.
It further constituted a special committee to meet with the executive arm and work with the Federal Government to resolve the issues surrounding the bills.
