Prof. P. O. Achimugu of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, has been selected to deliver the keynote address at the 2026 Bioinformatics Symposium scheduled to hold at Kaduna State University (KASU).
The two-day symposium, slated for Aug. 12 and 13, is themed: "Advancing Computational Biology Through Biosciences, Eco-sciences, and Precision Health."
Achimugu will present a keynote lecture titled: "The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Driving Research Novelty and Personalised Medicine."
The symposium is expected to bring together researchers, academics, healthcare professionals and industry experts to explore emerging innovations in computational biology, precision health and related fields.
According to the organisers, Achimugu was selected in recognition of his distinguished academic career spanning more than two decades, characterised by impactful research, innovation and leadership in software engineering and artificial intelligence.
His research has attracted international recognition through influential publications, high citation impact and collaborations that have advanced knowledge in software engineering and AI.
The organisers said his work had produced practical methodologies and intelligent tools that improve software development by enhancing the reliability, efficiency and scalability of software systems.
At AFIT, Achimugu has served as Head of the Department of Computer Science for three years, Dean of the Faculty of Computing for four years, and currently serves as Director of the Centre for Innovation and Research.
He has also mentored students and early-career researchers, reviewed manuscripts for leading international journals and contributed actively to global research networks.
Among his recent achievements is his contribution to the successful proposal that secured AFIT's participation in the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) programme, including support for establishing a Digital and Creative Hub at the institute.
Achimugu also serves as the Nigerian Team Lead for a proposed UK-Nigeria transnational education collaboration between AFIT and the University of Bradford to strengthen capacity development and academic exchange in Computer Science and specialised Engineering disciplines.
He continues to collaborate with universities, research institutions, industry and technology partners to develop innovative software engineering methodologies and AI-driven solutions.
His long-term vision is to strengthen Nigeria's global competitiveness in software engineering research, promote digital transformation and mentor the next generation of technology leaders.
