JNI demands compensation for travellers attacked in Plateau, prosecution of suspects

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has urged Federal and Plateau State governments to go beyond the "ceremonial" condemnation of the attack on travellers in Mangu, Plateau State, by arresting and ensuring quick prosecution of the perpetrators.

The Muslim umbrella body also demanded for compensation for the 13 victims killed and 18 others injured.

According to the JNI in a statement by its Secretary-General Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, mere condemnation is not enough deterrence in checking the excesses of the murderers, who have continued to take the lives of travellers in the state for decades.

"Condemnation alone can never stop these repeated madness, hence a decisive action by Governments must be seen to be done swiftly. Justice delayed is justice denied.

The JNI noted that the killings had continued since 1994 due to the intolerant and divisive tendencies of some people in the state and the government’s failure to act, which has made such barbaric killings as normal.

The JNI also condemned the profiling, intimidation, and killing of Muslims and northern travellers and the destruction of mosques in other parts of the country.

It said all governments in the country must be proactive through intelligence gathering, public enlightenments and orientations to end the menace.

"Perpetrators of such attacks must be seen to be fully and justifiably brought to book to serve as deterrent to other would-be perpetrators.
"Having reviewed these tragic developments, we in the name of Allah, the Most High, implore against any form of reprisal attack. Security agencies should be on the alert and intelligence gathering should be enhanced and intensified against any possible retaliatory attacks."

It demanded that those arrested must be prosecuted and the process must be transparent.

"The Plateau State Government should pay due compensation to all the deceased families and it should take-up complete medicals of all the injured victims of the Mangun attack. Mangu Local Government Council should also replace ABU’s 18-seater burnt bus," it added.

The JNI said Government must mop up small arms and light weapons in order to reduce the upsurge of killings in Plateau.

"We also expect the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN), and well-meaning civil societies and organisations to seriously seek redress for the deceased Mangun victims through the courts of law, because justice delayed is justice denied."
