The Labour Party (LP), has condemned an illegal National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and former Presidential candidate Peter Obi.

This, was contained in a statement issued to newsmen on Wednesday in Kaduna by Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, the National Secretary of the LP.

According to him, the NEC meeting held in Abuja was illegitimate and a clear breach of the party's constitution.

Ibrahim said that the party's leadership expressed concerns over Obi and Otti's desperation to hijack the party structure, particularly their visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters to pressure the electoral body into taking action against the party leadership.

The national secretary questioned why Obi and Otti would rush to INEC if the supreme court's decision truly favored them, suggesting they should instead follow legal procedures.

He accused Obi and Otti's meeting of issuing threats and intimidation to regain party leadership, even suggesting the use of brute force.

"This behavior, mirrors that of Comrade Joe Ajero, a political union leader who vowed to forcefully picket Labour Party offices nationwide,"he said.

Ibrahim, therefore, emphasised that the Supreme Court judgment mandates party leaders to adhere to the party's constitution.

He explained that:
" According to the constitution, only the National Secretary, in consultation with the National Chairman, can convene NEC meetings. Since Obi and Otti lack this authority, the meeting and its outcome are deemed illegal, incompetent, null, and void",he said.

Ibrahim highlighted Article 14 of the party's constitution, outlining NEC's composition, which includes key member.

"The notice for the disputed meeting listed attendees, including Vice Presidential Candidates, serving and former lawmakers, and members of unspecified bodies like the National Caretaker Committee, which isn't mentioned in the party's constitution,"he noted.

The national secretary stressed the importance of obeying the party's constitution and the law, expressing concerns that leaders who disregard the constitution while out of power may disregard it even more when in power.

He, therefore, urged the party members and the public to disregard the meeting and its outcome.
