A Non-Governmental Organisation, (NGO) Womenhood foundation of Nigeria has trained no fewer than 600 young women in Kaduna as birth attendants.
The Coordinator of the Foundation in Kaduna, Malam Abdulhadi Abdullahi, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Kaduna.
Abdullahi said the NGO had trained the youths on different skills acquisition programmes ranging from health aspects which included training as birth attendants, dental health technicians, health information managers and environmentalists.
Others include barbing salons for young boys and make-ups for the girls, among others.
Abdullahi noted that the aim of the training was to empower and reduce high rate of unemployment among the youths in the society in compliment to the efforts of the governments at all levels.
He said the training was mostly for young people who graduated from 'secondary schools'.
"like the train of birth attendants is mostly for girls; after the training period we send them to primary health care centres, private clinic to undergo some practical aspects under our supervision.
"We also access to see if they are fit to practice, if they are, we allow them to go and practice in their areas of residence", he said.
According to him, those that were trained in different aspects were offered some monetary assistance ranging from N100, 000 to N200, 000 to enable them go back to their places of residence and practice what they learnt, most especially remote villages that lacked enough health workers.
Abdullahi explained that the barbing salon training which was mainly for young boys from age 17- 30 years undergone three months training and at the end, they go back to set up their business.
"We make sure we assist them set up their shops to operate, including the make-up artists", he said .
NAN reports that the foundation has a monitoring team that usually visit the hospitals to monitor successes, progress and challenges faced by those who were trained in other to offer assistance.(NAN)

Lai Mohammed asks Nigerian youths to take advantage of other social media platforms for their businesses.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohamed says Twitter is showing little enthusiasm toward the dialogue it initiated to resolve issues leading to suspension of its operations.
The minister said this on Friday when he featured on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) programme “Good Morning Nigeria’’ monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
“I think there is a tepid approach by twitter.
“I say tepid because on Wednesday, I got a call from one of the foreign missions that twitter is ready to have serious discussion with high level members of government on this issue.
“But since then, mum has been the word and that is why I said tepid.
“As of today, I do not see twitter as being sincere in its approach to resolve the issue,’’ he said.
The minister reiterated the position that the operations of twitter was suspended indefinitely because the platform was being used to promote the views of those who want the country to be divided.
He said the action taken by the government was neither because twitter deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s message nor because it chose Ghana above Nigeria as a preferred location for its regional headquarters.
“Whether they are in Ghana or in Nigeria or anywhere else, if they allow their platform to be used to destabilise Nigeria, we will do the same.
“Of what importance will the investment be to us if they destroy our country,’’ he said.
For the many youths who said their livelihood depended on twitter, the minister said, there must be a country for them to earn a living.
He said if twitter was allowed to plunge the country into war with its activities, every Nigerian, including the youth would pay dearly for it.
Mohammed urged the youth to take advantage of other social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Google to explore their business ventures.
NAN reports that the Federal Government suspended indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter in Nigeria.
Mohammed who announced the suspension cited the persistent use of the platform for activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
He said the Federal Government had also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in the country.
The minister, at a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday said Twitter was seeking dialogue over the indefinite suspension.
