The Commander, Corps of Engineers (CCE), Maj.-Gen. S.T. Shafaru, has urged Nigerian Army Engineers (NAE) personnel to uphold integrity, professionalism and accountability in their operations.
Shafaru made the call at the Commander Corps of Engineers Combined First and Second Quarters Virtual Conference 2026, held via Zoom at the Headquarters Nigerian Army Engineers, Bonny Cantonment, Lagos, on July 28.
The conference brought together engineer brigade commanders, senior sapper officers serving in tri-service institutions, commanding officers and staff officers of the headquarters.
The CCE said the conference provided a platform for stakeholders to review activities, share experiences and address challenges affecting engineering operations and projects.
He said discussions at the conference covered army works and real estate, engineer search and disposal duties, administration, training, operations and logistics.
The participants also reviewed ongoing and completed projects, operational challenges in theatres of operation and lessons learned from previous engagements.
The conference also examined issues including trespass and ownership disputes involving Army lands, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), route clearance operations and defective or incomplete projects.
Shafaru urged commanders to ensure constant supervision at every stage of project execution, stressing the need to make safety a priority in all engineering activities.
He also advised personnel to handle engineering equipment with care, noting that such equipment was expensive and not easily acquired.
The CCE said the responsibilities of the Nigerian Army Engineers extended beyond infrastructure development and maintenance to emergency response, conflict support, military real estate management and search and disposal operations.
He called for increased collaboration, innovation, proper documentation and accountability to strengthen best practices across the Corps.
The Chief Sapper further urged commanders at all levels to prioritise capacity building, regular training and professional development to enable personnel respond effectively to emerging challenges.
He said excellence in the Corps' diverse responsibilities would contribute not only to successful military operations but also to national development and the well-being of society.
Shafaru expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, for his continued support and strategic guidance to the Nigerian Army Engineers.
The conference featured an interactive session and the adoption of the summary of major decisions reached at the CCE's Fourth Quarter Conference 2025 held at the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering, Makurdi.
The conference reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army Engineers to quality service delivery, adaptability, accountability and the sustenance of public trust.
