The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), on Friday said it significantly increased healthcare provider payments and reviewed registration premiums for some plans from in April 2025 due to rising cost of drugs and medication.
The State Coordinator of the scheme, Aminu Tanimu, said this during a stakeholders meeting in Kaduna.
He said capitation fees for healthcare providers was 750 before now while fee-for-service payments increased by 378% to incentivize higher quality care.
He added that individual and family plan premiums for programs like GIFSHIP also saw substantial increases, with the goal of ensuring the sustainability of the healthcare system and improving service delivery for enrollees.
"We are here to sensitise our enrollees, HMO and facilities to know the new things we have in the NHIA, which is the new packages",he said.
Tanimu explained that the core reason for the adjustments was the rising costs of pharmaceuticals and other medical services, making previous rates unsustainable,
according to him, the changes were based on findings from a comprehensive actuarial review to establish sustainable rates that align with current market dynamics and costs.
He added that the increased payments to providers are intended to encourage them to deliver better and provide higher-quality services to enrollees.
"Capitation ees increased from 750 to 1,450 per person. Adding of spouse is 2,500, change of facility is 1,000.
"Fee-for-Service (FFS) increased by 378%, Registration Premiums (GIFSHIP) and Individual Plan also increased to N38,780 annually".
Tainimu said the goal is for the increased payments to translate to better and more reliable healthcare services for enrollees, with strict enforcement by the NHIA.
He said the changes are expected to strengthen consumer protection measures for patients.
According to him, the scheme was programmed mainly for women, adding that and there are beneficiaries of the scheme that had VVF surgery at the Gambo sawaba hospital in Zaria.
"In this program, we give them free care and feeding"he said.
Some of the beneficiaries of the VVF surgery, expressed satisfaction and support for the scheme.
