The Kaduna State Ministry of Health says all is set for the distribution of 4.5 million insecticide treated nets across the state.

Dr Sule Danga, the ministry’s Programme Manager on Malaria Elimination made this known in an interview  with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kaduna.

Danga said that the exercise would be conducted in collaboration with the Society for Family Health (SFH).

He said that health workers have begun the distribution of tokens and the registration, while the net distribution will commence from June 30 to July 3 across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state.

“This is part of the government’s commitment to achieve a campaign against malaria diseases in the state,’’ he said.

According to him, Nigeria is among the countries with the highest malaria burdens, accounting for  25 per cent malaria cases worldwide.

“Although, there has been a notable decrease in malaria prevalence in the country, from 27 per cent in 2015 to 22 per cent in 2021, the disease remains a leading cause of illness and death in Nigeria, contributing to high rates of child mortality and reduction in productivity.

“Malaria has significant consequences, particularly to vulnerable populations like children under five years and pregnant women,’’ Danga said.

He further explained that untreated malaria can result in complications such as anemia, organ failure, and even death.

“To address the issue, the country has implemented various interventions at national, state, local government, and community levels include; seasonal malaria chemoprevention and insecticide-treated net campaigns.

“This integration offers comprehensive protection, increased coverage, improved sustainability, and cost-effectiveness” he said.

Danga explained that by combining the two strategies, significant progress could be made in reducing the malaria burden and improving public health outcomes in the country indices.

He, however, said the distribution process of treated nets would be done at a distribution point as against former practice of door to door. (NAN)
