Kaduna govt. targets 1.8 households for distribution of treated mosquito nets

By Stella Kabruk

The Kaduna State Ministry of Health on Wednesday said it will be distributing 4.5 million pieces of Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) to about 1.8 million households.

The Ministry's permanent Secretary Dr Aishatu Abubakar -Sadiq disclosed during a media parley at the ministry conference hall in Kaduna.

She said the exercise will be conducted in collaboration with Partners (National Malaria Elimination Program, Catholic Relief service, Society for family health and Malaria consortium ) and will run from June 30 to July 3.

"Distribution campaign is one of the major strategies to deliver nets to general population, and Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) has been found to reduce morbidity and mortality from malaria, in children 3-59months.

"Nigeria key strategy plan for vector control is to improve access and utilization of vector control interventions to at least 80 per cent of the targeted population by 2025.

According to her, Nigeria has distributed over 300million Insecticide treated nets
(ITNs) to date.

"This year’s campaign in Kaduna state will be integrated with the Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC).

"SMC is a lifesaving intervention where SPAQ, a malaria prevention drug is given to children 3-59 months.

The permanent Secretary noted that
about 2 million children under 5 will be reached in this year’s campaign from June to September.

"This year’s campaign will witness a slight modification, according to the targeted distribution strategy of the National Program, and to preserve our environment,we will be retrieving old nets through the End of Life of Nets program(EOLIN).

"In Kaduna state, 47 wards and communities will not be targeted for the nets, according to some demographic, epidemiological and physical considerations, as provided by the National malaria elimination program.

"These wards will however continue to benefit from a strengthened and focused routine ITN distribution for children under 5 and women attending Ante Natal Care, in 746 public health facilities in the state.

'The program is also exploring other vector control measures like Environmental sanitation, Larval source Management, Indoor residual spray etc, these measures have been found effective in reducing the mosquito vector densities and inadvertently reducing the prevalence of malaria in our dear state.

She added that Chairmen of the 23 LGAs are to provide leadership and support to the campaign team at the LGAs.

She appealed to residents to support the intervention by making their children available for administration of SPAQ, and provide information on households so they can be mobilized for the net redemption via a token.

She also urged residents to redeem their nets at the Distribution points that will be created for people with the e token to collect their nets.

"Return old and unused nets for proper disposal in an environmentally friendly manner. Not yield to insinuations that some ward were left out for reasons not true.(NAN)
