AFIT's Trailblazing Professor of Computer Science, Philip Achimugu

Professor Philip Achimugu, Professor of Computer Science, is the first inaugural lecturer at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT).

 According to Apher Doger (AD) Scientific Index, the prolific Scholar is the most cited Author and best Scientist in AFIT. 

His research and academic profile made AFIT appear in the global universities’ rankings since 2022 to date.

Prof. Achimugu is also the recipient of AFIT’s Best Civilian Academic Staff and Commandant’s Merit awards. 

He has served as either Chairman or member of nearly 40 University-wide committees. 

With over 100 reputable publications and numerous citations to his credit, Achimugu is arguably one of the foremost Professors of Computer Science in Nigeria.  

He served as Head of Department (HoD) of Computer Science in AFIT for three years and currently in his second term as Dean of the Faculty of Computing in the same institution.

Achimugu has undertaken both national and international assignments, credibly. 

He recently, in January 2025 presented a paper that won best paper award in a widely attended International conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirate and was a previous recipient of another best paper award in an international conference held in Bangkok, Thailand, in April 2014.

Achimugu has taught courses and graduated students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. 

 He is reputed for his versatility in software development processes, from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing, and maintenance.

 He has helped numerous students gain hands-on experience with a range of programming languages, tools, and technologies, as well as the latest software development methodologies and best practices.

In November 2024, the Don delivered AFIT’s first inaugural lecture where he among other things proposed frameworks through which Software and Information Technology can help aid actualization of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda particularly across the 8 focal areas which borders on food security, poverty alleviation, economic growth, job creation, access to capital, inclusion, rule of law, and anti-corruption fight. 

 Achimugu reviews articles and belong to editorial board membership for more than 25 prestigious journals and conference platforms. 

He has taught in many universities such as Lead City University Ibadan, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, First Technical University Ibadan, Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna and National Open University of Nigeria.

He belongs to many professional bodies and have also presented keynote speeches at both national and international conferences.

Achimugu serves as external examiner/assessor within and beyond the shores of Nigeria.
