Pulse.ng : Red cross, NCDC train 75 health care workers on Mpox outbreak response

The Nigerian Red Cross Society in collaboration with the Nigeria centre for Disease control (NCDC) on Wednesday trained 75 health workers from 15 states on Monkey Pox outbreak response in Kaduna state.

The Director, health and care , Nigerian Red Cross, Munir Jega said the training was aimed at equipping health care workers with necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively to the outbreak.

He stated that the response focuses on community -based surveillance and risk communication to empower communities with accurate information, promote preventive behaviours and infection prevention and control (IPC).

Jega added that mental health and psychological support (MHPSS) for affected individuals and recovery patients would be given and also support for vaccination rollouts.

He explained that the society had distributed over 200,000 posters and flyers to support risk communication and community engagement activities for mpox intervention.

According to him,the NCDC had confirmed 108 Mpox cases put of the 1,395 suspected cases in 2024, spanning 26 stares and the Federal Capital Territory.

“We are developing a preparedness plan for the northern region aimed at reducing disease transmission and safeguarding vulnerable populations in low -burden states.

“Our ultimate goal is to not only respond to this outbreak but strengthen the resilience of our health systems for the future “,he said.

Mr Nsikak Udo, department of Subnational NCDC said the training of trainers was to help health workers improve surveillance, reporting systems and data management to help in improved public health decisions in terms of Mpox.

He said that participants were expected to go to the filed and make sure that all cases that are relate to Mpox and other vaccine preventable disease were reported.

Earlier, the health and care officer of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Joan Ojukwu said that IFRC was giving technical support to NCDC in providing information and raising awareness on Mpox .

She stated that IFRC is engaging the national primary health care development agency and state primary health care to support Vaccine roll out to prevent Mpox.

Meanwhile, some of the participants said the training was timely and would help them carryout community based surveillance and risk communication on Mpox effectively.

Aturu Christiana,a participant from Kogi state, said that the training had been impactful and enlightening for her adding she would step down the Information to local communities in her state.

Murtala Aliyu a participant from Gombe state,said that he would translate the message to his local dialect Hausa for better understanding of the disease in local communities.
