The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, has called on the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mr Mele Kolo Kyari, to step aside and allow for an unrestricted probe by the House of Representatives into the payment of N20 billion to a ghost consultant.
Cmrd. Isah Abubakar, President of the Council, made the call in a statement issued to newsmen on Monday in Kaduna.
He alleged that the NNPC was core in manipulation during the fuel subsidy regime which was seen during the acute fuel scarcity that lasted over six months.
Abubakar lamented that, during the dark period, Nigerians bought fuel at about N400 per litre, while the Federal Government spendings on subsidy skyrocketed.
He therefore, urged the House of Representatives to probe the NNPC beyond the N20 billion naira contract scam.
The Council's President believed that a thorough investigation into the payment of the N20 billion naira to a ghost consultant was necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in the management of Nigeria's oil and gas industry.
"We are calling on the House of Representatives to take urgent action and investigate the NNPC thoroughly. We believe that outcome of the investigation will help to restore the confidence of Nigerians in the oil and gas industry and the government as a whole,"he said.
He therefore restated their committment to ensuring that the NNPC is held accountable for its actions and that the management of Nigeria's oil and gas industry is transparent and accountable.
"We believes that the future of Nigeria's oil and gas industry depends on the actions taken by the government and the NNPC to address the issues raised by the payment of N20 billion naira to a ghost consultant,"Abubakar said.
He disclosed their resolve to a massive civil protest if the GCEO refuses to step aside, while urging other civil society organisations to join them in this struggle to hold the NNPC accountable for its actions. (NAN)
