The Kaduna State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has mobilised 55 pints of blood for the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Kaduna, to mark the 2021 World Blood Donor Day.
Dr Shuaibu Joka, NMA's Director of Sports, said at the event on Tuesday in Kaduna that the mobilisation became necessary to increase awareness on improving blood transfusion services in the state.
“There is low level of voluntary blood donation and we want to create more awareness for residents to see the importance of donating blood to save lives", he said.
“We are happy we are able to mobilise 55 pints and we hope to do more as we see residents responding by coming out to donate.”
According to Joka, the theme for the years' programme which was tagged ‘Celebrating the Gift of Blood’, was important as it would attract more donors if increased awareness was made.
He noted that the exercise was in collaboration with the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) and the Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, Kaduna.
“Blood transfusion plays a critical role in the provision of qualitative healthcare to the people.
“It remains a scarce and critical resource needed by patients with acute and chronic ailments,” Joka said.
He called on media outlets to increase awareness programmes and advocacy for positive mindset and behavioural change to enable the eligible population toward sustained voluntary blood donation.
He also called on residents to donate blood in order to save lives.
“Join the health movement, be a health hero and patriot by donating voluntarily and regularly.
“Add your voice to the call for improved funding and regulation of blood transfusion,” he said.
The association also called for the speedy passage of the National Blood Service Commission Bill by the National Assembly, and increased funding of blood transfusion service in the country. (NAN)

The governor has also presented six brand new operational security vehicles to the Imo command.
Governor Hope Uzodinma, of Imo, has announced the introduction of a policy that would insure the lives of personnel of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) in the state.
Uzodinma made this disclosure during his visit to the Police Command Headquarters in Owerri, on Tuesday.
He was at the command to commiserate with the NPF over the officers who lost their lives in the recent attacks by unknown gunmen in the state.
The governor, who also presented six brand new operational security vehicles to the command, reiterated his commitment to ridding the state of all forms of crime and criminality.
He charged the officers to brace up in their game, in tackling insecurity and restoring peace and stability in the state.
Uzodinma said that a social welfare package would be launched to motivate them and enhance their individual and collective service delivery.
"I want to assure you that Imo government will not let you do this work alone. Government will partner with the Nigerian Police to ensure that our people sleep with their two eyes closed.
"I want to extend my condolences to the immediate families of those officers who lost their lives during this ugly period.
"Government is putting together a programme that will encourage the children, wives and husbands of the slain officers.
"Imo government will bring an insurance policy, in addition to what the Nigerian Police Force has, that will insure lives of men and women of the Nigerian Police working in Imo State.
"In case of any casualty, palliative measures alone will not be provided by the government.
"Insurance companies will also take responsibility of making sure that the liabilities and obligations of those who died will be contained and taken care of through that policy," he said.
In his remark, the state Police Commissioner, Mr Abutu Yaro, appreciated the governor for the visit, stressing that it would boost the morale of the officers to do their best.
He stated that through the governor's support and gallant efforts of his men, peace and normalcy had been restored to the state.
"Today, Imo is safe again and secure for businesses and social lives; we shall continue to do our best to maintain a safe state for citizens and residents of Imo State," he said.
