The Global Peace Foundation of Nigeria, says it is collaborating with Justice, Development and Peace Caritas (JDPC) to checkmate criminality and ethno-religious crisis in Kaduna State.
The Country Director of the Foundation, Rev. Joseph Hayab, said during a roundtable discussion on sustaining peace in Abakpa community in Kaduna on Wednesday.
Hayab noted that even though there was so much division and mutual suspicion in the state, majority of communities are still multi ethnic and religious.
He however said that the wide divisions must be bridged so that people will trust one another and live together as one.
“Kaduna will not enjoy peace unless we restore that integration, the togetherness we lived in before.
“If people live in isolation to one another they begin to suspect each other and enemies will use that.
“So, Global Peace foundation will establish relationship with many groups to help in the restoration of peace and togetherness in our communities.
“Nigeria must come back as one. There is so much division in our country and what you hear everyday is divisive and ethno-religious sentiments, ” he noted.
The Northern Coordinator of the foundation, Sheikh Halliru Maraya urged residents to embrace each other regardless of religious and ethnic background.
He called on all to unite in the fight against insecurity and criminality ravaging the country.
Maraya said, “Let’s do all that we can to ensure peace is maintained in this community and beyond.
“If we are united as Christians and Muslims, kidnappers and bandits tormenting us will be defeated.”
The representative of JDPC, Rev. Joshua Achir described peace as key to development, adding that the peace meeting in Abakpa was held “because the community has a long history of peaceful coexistence.”
He however said mutual suspicion has begun to manifest in the community.
“What informed this gathering is because the community seemed deserted, Abakpa used to be a place where people live together as one.”
The ward head of Abakpa, Mr Rabiu Sani commended the organisations for the peace advocacy in the community.
Sani said the community has Christians, Muslims and others living peacefully for decades.(NAN)
