NGO calls on Northern states on priority in training female health resource personnel

By Stella Kabruk

An Non Governmental Organisation, Population and Reproductive Health Initiative, has called on Northern states especially Kaduna  Government to give priority to training of female health resource personnel in order to close the gap that exists in the region.

Punshak Watle- Matawal the programme administrator and   officer of Girls for Health (G4H) project made the call during a media  chat on the girls for health project executed by the NGO on Monday in Kaduna.

Matawal said alot of girls desire to pursue their dreams and aspirations but don't have the opportunities due to lack of securing admissions or getting married which made them stop half way as the husbands don't  allow them to continue.

He commended the Kaduna State government for taking a step to starting a foundation year program.

" If we don't have female health providers especially in the rural areas, they won't be able to open up and access health delivery because most of them will not want to be attended by a male provider.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Girls for Health (G4H) project as the name implies is a project conceived to close the gap of  shortage of female human resources for health that exists in northern Nigeria.

The project is school-based, thereby being implemented in schools not at community level.

" The project started in 2016 in four states of Northern Nigeria (Kebbi, Sokoto,Jigawa and Kaduna and is supported by Bill and Melinda gates Foundation.

Matawal added that the project supported three cohorts of girls totalling 375( 125 per cohort) and  113 of cohort girls were already admitted into various institutions of higher learning.

" Out of the 375 beneficiaries,113 are already admitted into various institutions of higher learning", he said.

" 42 were admitted into health related training institutions,22 into the university,28 into College of Education,10 in the polytechnic and 11 in other institutions.

" We selected five schools, one each from five LGAs in Kaduna State,we selected 25 girls from each school per cohort (total of 125 girls per cohort) and each state is led by the state team leader.

Matawal further said the selection of the beneficiaries were girls who were largely from poor background and from senior secondary school, class two.

" We conducted baseline survey for the girls selected in order to ascertain their level of performance before intervention, conducted safe spaces for girls in order for them to acquire life skills, implemented vacation program and paid for WAEC and JAMB exams fees for the girls.

" We conducted inter- school debates and quiz for our project girls across the five schools, took them for excursion to hospitals where they learn from those practicing in the medical professional, bonded the girls with thier communities so they can give back at least two years of service to their communities after becoming trained health workers.

" We also conducted foundation science training to further groom them to be competitive during entrance exams or weeding exams and conducted end line survey to assess the impact of the project on students performance.

" With the support of the project, it help arouse zeal of parents to send their girls to schools as the girls have taken challenge to work hard and encourage their younger ones.

Matawal urge the girls not to give up but keep hope alive and work hard in order to accomplish their aspirations and also called on parents to give support to their girls to enable them achieve their aspirations of becoming health care providers.

He  called on development partners to continue the good work of supporting  the government with  special attention to training of female human resources for health.

" With this experience, we learnt that a project like this can be implemented at the community level too as the community leaders will be carried along from onset and more less advantaged girls will be reached", Matawal said. (NAN)

National Ear Centre, Med-El, perform 2 successful cochlear implant surgeries –CMD

By Sani Idris

The National Ear Care Centre (NECC), in collaboration with Med-El, a hearing implant company, had conducted two successful cochlear implant surgery in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the patients who had the implants were a six-year old boy and a 46-year-old woman, who had totally lost hearing.

Addressing journalists on Monday, in Kaduna, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the NECC , Dr Mustapha Abubakar-Yaro said the Centre, which had initially scheduled four surgeries, shifted the other two to a later date.

He said that cochlear implant surgery was the treatment for profound or total hearing loss, as it restores hearing.

The CMD noted that despite the multi-modality approach of the implant surgery, the Centre had all the equipment and trained personnel to handle it.

“We have the audiologists, surgeons, speech rehabilitation experts, and also a collaboration with the Med-El group from Egypt, to provide the implant and technical assistance to enable us have a successful implant programme.

“We also have specialists that after the implant, they can do the speech therapy, rehabilitation and monitor the device.

“We want to stand as a Centre of excellence for cochlear implant programme so that we can provide hope for deaf Nigerians”, he said.

The CMD stated that the Centre would provide a conducive environment for the programme to succeed, and also make their reports available to the minister of health to enable the government assist especially in providing the implant.

He added that the Centre would also collaborate with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and Non Governmental Organisations in order to support the programme.

“The cochlea device is not manufactured in Nigeria and it is quite expensive, we cannot provide it for free but the government, NGO’s and NHIS are part of the advocacy we want to make after the programme, so that it can be made available for Nigerians.

According to the CMD, the cochlear implant programme could reduce medical tourism.

“Cochlear implant is something Nigerians had to go abroad to have, now we are bringing it to their door steps “, he said.

” We are happy for commencing the cochlear implant programme and it’s a programme for the country, we seek for the support and cooperation of all meaning Nigerians for it to be a success.

“Cochlear implant in Nigeria has come to stay, we will look at all the challenges and see how we can improve on it”, he said.

He congratulated the cochlea implant team, who had worked tirelessly to ensure that the commencement of the program was a success.

“We also appreciate the Med-El group for making it possible for us, and providing training for our doctors which is going to be a continuous thing, we will also support them for the benefit of Nigerians”, the CMD said.

He urged the media and other relevant stakeholders to publicise the availability of cochlear implant in Nigeria, to complement the efforts of the Government against medical tourism.

Also speaking, Engr. Muhammad El-Disouky, Development Regional Manager, Med-El medical, Austria, expressed joy over the huge step taken on the National cochlear implant programme.

“We have been doing cochlear implant surgeries in Nigeria for quite some time, but it was not on a national level, doing it here in the NECC will make it a national cochlear implant programme.

El-Disouky said the cochlear implant device is the only known device to restore hearing for the profound and total hearing loss patients.

” it can change the life of the patients, who are sometimes a burden to the society, it’s a big step because there is need for so many cochlear implants in the world.

He added that although the requirements for the implant were not easy, Nigerians were lucky to meet up with the requirements.

“Because of Nigeria’s expertise and manpower in this Centre, the cochlear implant programme will be successful, we are very proud to have worked with you’, he said.

El-Disouky, however, explained that their mission was not to perform the surgery, but to launch a training camp to facilitate subsequent implants to be done with out their help.

“Med-El is a company that is known for its technology and services, which are very important to us because without the services, the expensive device is useless”, El-Disouky said.

He thanked the CMD for inviting many surgeons and clinicians, to attend their training courses for the success of subsequent cochlear implant surgeries.

In his address, Prof. Ahmed Mehanna, a professor of cochlear implant, at the University of Alexandria, Egypt, also expressed his gratitude to the personnel in NECC and Med-el Africa group.

He said that there was the need for the implementation of a ‘hearing screening programme’ so as to recruit more cases.

“You have excellent audiologists, excellent speech pathologists, we hope everything will be good and we are looking forward to come again”, Mehanna said. (NAN)

NOA solicits support from stakeholders on campaign for govt policies, program

By Aisha Gambo

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in its continued effort of enlightening citizenry on government policies, programmes and activities on Tuesday solicited the support of critical stakeholders in Kaduna.

Galadima Zubair-Soba,the state director NOA ,made this known when he led the management team of the state directorate of the agency on an advocacy visit to the head of service Kaduna state and other stakeholders.

He mentioned that the advocacy visit was to solicits for their support for the agency’s various campaigns on drug abuse as well as inculcating the preventive protocols and guidelines of COVID 19 among others.

“Also,to solicits your support on government’s current policies particularly on deregulation of the downstream sector and the enthronement of good governance, transparency and accountability through the provision of the freedom of information act(FOIA)”, he said.

Soba also stated that the agency had deployed several communication platforms to reach the various segment of societies in Kaduna which would harness people responses.

He added that it was frightening to learn that despite the almost daily lost of lives as a result of COVID 19 there were many Nigerians who still don’t believe on the existence of disease.

“The agency therefore, pursuant to its broad mandate is concerned about this disbelief of some people on the virus and the negative perception of some Nigerians on policies and programmes of government.

“This is why we are embarking on this exercise”, he said.

Meanwhile, the head of service , Mrs Bariatu Mohammed stated that the state government would give NOA all the necessary support needed for the campaign.

She added that it was very important for citizens to know about government policies, programs and activities.

NAN reports that zubair GALADIMA SOBA had earlier paid similar visit to the state officials of the National Union of road transport workers (NURTW), District head of Kawo and Doka with the same message.(NAN)
